Dear Friends and Patients
On April 3 at 5:30pm , there will be a plastic surgery open house at my Philadelphia office at 8th and Spruce Street. The official address is 301 South 8th Street, Suite 3H Garfield Duncan Building. Look for the blue awning; this is the Garfield Duncan Building.
We will be demonstrating our new 3D Vectra Face and Body Sculptor Imaging system. It is especially good for breast augmentation and can show your look with different breast implant sizes. See what you may look like after a rhinoplasty with a chin implant.
We will be offering injectables such as Botox, Restylane, Radiesse, Evolence and Juvederm at special pricing. Gina and Mildred from my office will be there to answer your questions.
I will be there to answer your questions. Come for a complimentary massage. Gina’s favourite caterer will be there with refreshments. Prizes will be given out.
Call the office at 216 829 6900 to RSVP or go to and fill out the Dr Lo contact form to RSVP.
It should be fun; see you there.

Okay, it is the new year, 2009. You may be considering some cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. The winter season is a good time for breast augmentation, tummy tucks and liposuction and other plastic surgery procedures as it is cooler and you can bundle up and hide the areas that are healing.
With breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants, you will be ready for the spring and summer as the implants will have plenty of time to settle and soften. With liposuction, all the final swelling will be gone by 3 months. With tummy tucks, you will be healed enough to really begin exercising. With rhinoplasty, healing is easier with the cooler weather.
I advise before considering any procedure, that you are near your ideal weight. However there are occasions where you do not have to be your ideal weight when performing for example, a tummy tuck.
Visit for further information on procedures that you may be interested in.

Patients will often bring in pictures of their favorite actor/actress from magazines and show them to me during the plastic surgery consultation. “Dr. Lo, can I look something like this? I really like this nose.” ” I like these breasts on this movie star, I want my breast augmentation surgery do look like this.”
Most patients are smart and I encourage pictures to be used as a point of discussion. By understanding what a patient wants and their goals, then I can deliver surgically what they are looking for. Using the pictures, I can also tell the patients what is NOT possible and be realistic about what their goals are for their facial, rhinoplasty or breast augmentation surgery. So, the bottom line is that pictures are useful when used correctly and patients are realistic.

As patients, we all want the best result, kind of like a Michelangelo portrait, but most of us understand that we have to be realistic. During the consultation, whether it be for breast augmentation, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty, upper eyelid surgery, liposuction or any plastic surgery procedure, it is important to discuss your goals with your plastic surgeon. It is even more important for the plastic surgeon to tell you what is possible, and what is NOT possible in terms of the outcome and result. This way, as a patient, you can make an educated decision whether you wish to proceed with the surgery based on what you want to achieve. Only a real and honest discussion with your plastic surgeon will allow you to closer to your goals for plastic surgery. For further information visit or email me at with questions.

On one of the forms that new patients are required to fill out before their plastic surgery consultation with me, asks about the medical and surgical history. This is the most important form because it give me information about whether the patient is fit for a plastic surgery procedure and to avoid and anticipate problems.
Most patients are very good at filling out their history. I can tell whether it has been filled out properly or not. I always ask followup questions about the answers. Obviously, some patients forget their medical or surgical history or are nervous and details are easily forgotten.
However, there are some patients that (believe or not) intentionally don’t tell me they had previous plastic surgery on their nose or face or state they never had liposuction. Meanwhile, being a plastic surgeon, I can obviously tell whether you have had plastic surgery before.
Honesty is the best policy. Your plastic surgeon is your advocate and friend. He/she needs all the information about your medical and surgical history in order to give you the best recommendations. This also includes telling your plastic surgeon about all your medications, herbal medications, vitamins, etc.
This will allow your potential plastic surgery procedure to go as smoothly as possible.

Patients often come in for their plastic surgery visit and ask” Dr. Lo, what’s new?”
Okay, let me run down a few items. this is not meant to be a comprehensive list.
1. Dermal Fillers- the latest is Evolence; however in the crowded dermal filler choices, I do not feel that it holds much advantage over what I am using now such as Restylane, Radiesse and Juvederm. Dermal fillers come in different consistencies depending on what areas you want to fill in and last about 6 months to 1 year.
2. Reloxin- This is the recently FDA approved alternative to Botox but is not yet available. We are still trying to determine what is the cost, and I think after that, we can determine if it will be better or more cost effective than Botox.
3. Liposuction- still the tumescent technique with ultrasonic or PAL(power assist) lipo are good techniques. We are waiting for the studies on Smart Lipo or Laser Lipo to see if it is proven to be better.
4. Breast Augmentation- not much new here. The new silicone implants are working well. For saline breast augmentation, I still prefer the Moderate Plus Profile implant. No word on FDA approval for the next generation Cohesive Gel implant although I believe these implants will have limited use as they are shaped, textured, require a larger incision/scar and firmer than the current silicone implants.
5.Nose Surgery- The non surgical rhinoplasty has limited application and is not permanent. If you really have concerns about your nose, than a formal closed or open rhinoplasty is still necessary for best cosmetic results.
6. Tummy tucks- no major change here. The pain pump has really helped patients recover faster with less pain and back to work in 7-10 days.
7. Male chest contouring for gynecomastia- No change here. The combination of liposuction with subcutaneous mastectomy where necessary are still giving very nice results.
As always, questions can be sent to me at , I personally answer all Emails. Visit for more information on the plastic surgery topics of your interest.

Patients often ask me if it is too late in the summer to have plastic surgery. Most procedures that I do, the recovery is 1-2 weeks. Whether it is breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty or tummy tuck, with the short recovery times, you may be back to the beach or swimming pool in 2 weeks. Your incisions will be healed such that the water will not harm it. Now, you won’t be playing beach volleyball or doing laps or body surfing but the sun and water will not hurt you. (Always wear sun block, no tanning salons for 1 month.

The most important decision for a woman considering breast augmentation is whether to choose silicone gel or saline implants. I will summarize the important differences. When you look at a woman with breast implants, you cannot tell whether she has saline or silicone just by looking at her breasts. If you touch her breasts, you may be able to tell the difference. Saline implants are soft but silicone implants tend to be softer especially if the woman started with very little breast tissue to begin with. If the woman had a reasonable amount of breast tissue and skin tone, it probably will not make much difference whether she chose silicone or saline implants. If you have very little breast tissue, thin skin and almost flat chested, silicone implants will most likely give you a better result and feel softer and have much less chance of wrinkling and rippling. Saline implants may be inserted through smaller incisions(cuts) where silicone implants require larger incisions(cuts). Therefore breast augmentation with silicone implants leave longer scars. For silicone implants, I use the crease incision or the periareolar incision, occassionally I use the transaxillary approach. With saline implants, I prefer a small incision in the armpit which heals beautifully and no one will see. I also use the crease or periareolar incision for saline implants. Go to http://www.dradrianlo.com/silicone-breast-augmentation/index.php for information about silicone implants and http://www.dradrianlo.com/breast-augmentation/index.php for saline implants.

I am seeing more and more male patients that desire removal of the extra tissue below the nipple and around the chest area. Often this has been present since puberty and a teenager. No matter what the patient does, weight lifting or losing weight the extra tissue just stays there. This extra tissue is called gynecomastia or “gyneo” for short. It is consists of both fat and glandular tissue. Surgery is the only way to remove this tissue. Medications do not work. Losing weight does not work. Chest/Pec exercises do not work.
To treat gynecomastia, I use a combination of tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction for contouring and subcutaneous mastectomy to remove the glandular tissue. A small cut is made in the armpit for the liposuction and another cut at the edge of the nipple/areolar like a half circle. This surgical method is very successful for treating gynecomastia. It is nice to see my male patients being able to take their shirt off at the beach or pool and feel comfortable and self confident about their new normal look. Closed Internal rhinoplasty is a great technique for reshaping the nose. All the cuts are on the inside of the nose, with no outside cuts. Using this approach, the bump on the nose may be removed, the nose made smaller if necessary and the tip refined and less bulbous. I have been doing the closed internal approach for my entire career. There is also the external or open approach which I use for more “difficult” noses. This involves a small cut below the nose on the middle part or columellar.
However, most noses may be improved with a closed/internal rhinoplasty. Unfortunately, alot of plastic surgeons do not know how to perform this technique or have very little experience. I believe that the closed internal rhinoplasty is a great technique in reshaping and improving noses. Go to http://www.dradrianlo.com/before-after/rhinoplasty.php to see before and after pictures of my patients.
